Poly/ML 4.1.4 Release

I have built a new release for Poly/ML and installed it on the sourceforge site at http://sourceforge.net/projects/polyml . There is a database for each of the i386, PPC and Sparc architectures and sources for the driver, compiler and Basis library. As before, you need the driver plus the appropriate database. This version has fixes for various bugs including the Linux segmentation fault which was fixed in the development sources. It also turns off optimisation in the C compiler which seems to cause problems. The main change, though, is that the Basis Library now conforms to Gansner and Reppy's book. This contains a few changes which are incompatible with the old version, notably the use of array and vector slices. Please try out this version and let me know if there are any significant problems. If I don't hear anything in the next week or so I will update the web site to point to this as the current official release. If I've failed to include a fix/suggestion you sent me I apologise. I'll try and make sure these get into the CVS. I have not built any packages at the moment. If anyone has experience of building packages for particular operating systems and distributions it might be better if they could do it. If you do and want to include it on the sourceforge site let me know. Now that Poly/ML is licensed under LGPL it should be possible to include it in the operating system distributions. I will make a Windows package and upload that shortly. I know it's been a long time since the last Poly/ML distribution but I think on the whole it's better not to produce them unless there is a significant reason. David.

Sourceforge project

I have set up a SourceForge project for Poly/ML which I am intending to use for Poly/ML downloads in future. It can be found at http://sourceforge.net/projects/polyml . It currently has the latest development sources in CVS. If anyone would like to become a project developer please contact me. David.

Poly/ML and the SML'97 Basis Library

Trying to get ProofPower working against the a recent version (110.54) of Standard ML of New Jersey has flagged a few disccrepancies between the Basis Library as implemented in Poly/ML 4.1.3 and the documentation at http://www.standardml.org/Basis/history.html. What is the position for Poly/ML intended to be? (The discrepancies I found are in Array.copy and TextIO.inputLine which have different signatures. Poly/ML agrees with the so-called stable version 110.0.7 of SML/NJ, but as that's 7 years old, it's not a very useful implementation!). Regards, Rob.

Still getting strange behavior with Poly 4.13 on WinXP

Hi, I still get problems with unwanted environment retention on Windows XP. That wasn't the case in Fall 2003, so I'm wondering if the many Windows updates have resulted in an incompatibility with 4.13. I've even tried re-installing 4.13, but get the same behavior. It seems as if I've tried what seems like everything, except reinstalling 4.13 every time I want to have a fresh environment. Ideas? Thanks, Byron Hale

Poly/ML Licensing

There has been some discussion about the Poly/ML licence and the fact that it is "non-standard" and so causes problems with including it in open-source distributions. I have now received permission from CUTS, the copyright holders for the bulk of Poly/ML, to issue Poly/ML under the Lesser GPL. This seemed the best choice as it allows any commercial users to distribute a binary-only version with their software. I will update the web-site shortly and change the source code to refer to LGPL rather than the Poly/ML licence for the next release. I'm currently working on updating the basis library to match Gansner and Reppy's book. Once that's completed there will be a new release. Thanks to Larry Paulson and Mike Gordon for their assistance in negotiating with CUTS. David Matthews.

FYI, Lest anyone be planning an upgrade, I get segmentation faults on PolyML startup using Linux 2.6.9 (using PolyML as distributed with Isabelle). Maybe it's just me though. 2.6.8.1 seems fine though. Martin

Spontaneous corruption of PolyML 4.13 Database on WinXP

Hi, I'm sorry to report this, but the database on PolyML 4.13, Win XP, has saved state when I have studiously avoided doing so. Suggestions? Thanks, Byron Hale

Thanks to WIlliam Lovas, I have a reasonable answer for the errors I was getting and what might be done about them. SMLNJ seemed to handle errors more consistently than PolyML, but once there is a syntactic error, error handling is problematic anyway. Byron Hale

Interpreted Version of PolyML 4.1.3

Hi, while trying to build an interpreted PolyML system based on version 4.1.3 (version 4.0 works fine) I'm getting linker errors, e.g.: /tmp/driver/improve.c:724: undefined reference to `MD_update_code_addresses' Any hints? Achim
