Looking for a Poly/ML 4.1.3 driver for sparc

Hello, I'd like to revive an old application compiled by Poly/ML 4.1.3 on a sparc workstation, to be run in a (to be built) qemu sparc-solaris VM. I found the database of the application, but I cannot find the corresponding poly 4.1.3 sparc driver. So, before going forward, I would be very grateful if one of you kept such a driver and could send me a copy. Best Regards, ? Bernard.

I have created a new organization on the chat system Zulip.com. This Zulip organization now has ?streams? Callback from a foreign thread

I am wondering whether it is possible for a new thread to be created in foreign code by some other library and for the new thread to call back into ML.? As the new thread would not be created by Poly/ML, presumably it would not have its own ML stack and that sounds problematic, given the description in the original paper [1].? On the other hand, perhaps an ML stack is provided by the callback closure.? I briefly looked at the source code, and ended up at buildCallBack in X86ForeignCall.ML, but I would need to understand the code generation to make sense of that. Like every thread that runs ML code this new thread has both an operating-system stack that it uses when running in the RTS or in ?foreign? code through the foreign-function interface (FFI) and an ML stack that is used when running ML code. Update to ARM code-generator

The long-promised update to the ARM code-generator is now in Git master. This builds on the old version by adding the register allocation strategy borrowed from the X86 version as well as low-level peephole optimisation. On my Apple M1 processor it now seems to be faster than X86 code with Rosetta. There are still some improvements to be made, particularly with floating point, but no major changes are anticipated. It includes one optimisation that isn't present on the X86 at the moment: small tuples are returned in registers rather than on the stack. Please try it and let me know how it goes. David

Poly/ML package in Debian and Ubuntu

Does anyone know anything about the polyml package in Debian and Ubuntu? It seems that the currently packaged version is still 5.7.1. I've seen a couple of bug reports that have turned out to be issues that have long since been fixed. I'm quite happy to have Poly/ML packaged for distributions but if they get out of date then they become a problem. David

Start poly in an augmented environment

Hi, I find the Basis Library to be inadequate for many of my use cases. E.g. I'm used to having built-in Set and Map/Dict abstract datatypes (ADTs); and built-in sort function for all the common ADTs. Then, I realise I can start poly by loading all the code with "--use FILE" from command line. So, my question is how to suppress "poly --use ROOT.sml" loaded definition message to STDOUT? E.g. $ poly --use ROOT.sml Poly/ML 5.8.2 Release val testme = "Test me!": string <---- suppress this line val it = (): unit <---- and this line > 1; val it = 1: int <---- while keep printing of results I have tried "poly --use 'FILE' -q" with the "-q" option. But it turns off printing of results as well (which is undesired). I hope there is an easy way (probably a switch/flag?) to achieve what I want, and avoid writing another REPL. 5.9 released

Poly/ML version 5.9 was officially released on Github last weekend. There is a fixes-5.9 branch which already contains one fix, but that just affects the interpreted version. David

Size of stand-alone executables

David, Thanks for your reply to my post about linking errors. You were quite right. I have now rebuilt everything on 5.8.2 and have reproduced the problem I was trying to investigate. My user was trying to create an executable to run a specific function in an extension of ProofPower as a stand-alone program rather than via the ProofPower read-eval-print loop. He was surprised that executable is much bigger than the saved state that the read-eval-print loop loads. Here are the sizes I got. -rw-r--r-- 1 rda staff 44217560 Nov 25 19:06 main1.o -rwxr-xr-x 1 rda staff 33928480 Nov 25 19:07 main1 -rw-r--r-- 1 rda staff 24260472 Nov 25 19:10 saved_state Here main1.o is the result of calling PolyML.export, main1 is the executable and saved_state is the result of calling PolyML.Compiler.saveState. He is seeing even bigger differences (possibly because he is compiling on Windows?). The question remains though: why is the .o file much bigger than the executable and why is the executable much bigger than the saved state? Can we do anything to reduce the size of the executable. (We are both calling PolyML.shareCommonData on the entry point function beforecalling PolyML.export.) Regards, Rob.
