Null pointer and comparing CInterface.vol values

I am currently implementing type t val null : t val isNull : t -> bool where type t = CInterface.vol. There is no problem doing this but I wondered whether I could improve the CInterface structure to avoid annoying little C library functions. Would it be at all controversial to include null : vol in CInterface? Regarding comparison of vols, it makes sense that vol is not an eqtype because it stores more than just the "raw vol". Generally, is it safe to compare vols using their "raw vols"? I.e. could garbage collection or data sharing cause the raw vols to become invalid? Even if the raw vols were valid but changed behind the scenes, such comparisons may be of dubious value if the result could change due to garbage collection or data sharing. If vol comparison is reliable, would it be useful to have an eq or compare function in CInterface? Otherwise, could CInterface include isNull : vol -> bool ? I am happy to have a go at a patch is this sounds useful. Phil

Y combinator crashes Poly/ML

Hi, I have an implementation of the Y which crashes Poly/ML. Take the program below and evaluate "fact n" with n>3. I've tried it on both x86 and SPARC Solaris systems with Poly/ML 5.3, as well as on a (x86) MacOSX system with Poly/ML 5.4.1. The program works in both Moscow ML and SMLNJ, so I'm pretty sure it is correct SML. scanaddrs.cpp:107: Assertion Failed

Hi, Poly/ML fixes-5.4 (revision 1373) just terminated with poly: scanaddrs.cpp:107: PolyWord ScanAddress::ScanStackAddress(PolyWord, StackObject*, bool): Assertion `val.IsDataPtr()' failed. on my machine (Linux 3.1.1-2.fc16.x86_64) while I was trying to build Isabelle/HOL. I am afraid the error is intermittent and has only occurred once so far. Is there anything I can do to provide more useful debugging information if this happens again? Kind regards, Tjark

CInterface.setFinal pointer mismatch

I am using setFinal to free a string (char *) whose pointer is returned via a parameter (char **) with address/deref to construct/destruct the char ** parameter. Unfortunately, I cannot get this to work. It seems that a function registered with setFinal is not always passed the C pointer (of the vol) that it was registered with, in particular, when the vol supplied to setFinal is derived from address/deref. E.g. setFinal mycfun (deref (address v)) does not call mycfun with the same C pointer as for setFinal mycfun v This seems like an issue to me but perhaps I have misunderstood something. The attached example in eg1.tar.gz demonstrates this. After unpacking, cd eg1/ make bin # build eg1.so LD_LIBRARY_PATH=.: poly < eg1.sml # change glibc name if req. See eg1.sml for details. I have tried Poly/ML versions as follows: 5.4 x86_64 5.4.1 x86_64 5.4 i386 r1352 i386 and all have this pointer mismatch. (With i386, the pointer passed to the C function is null whereas it is some nearby pointer with x86_64.) Phil

setFinal important detail

I found an issue with my use of setFinal to free allocated strings that was causing a memory leak. I hadn't appreciated a behavioural detail of setFinal, though it seems obvious now I know. In particular, for setFinal f v, it is (the C value referenced by) v at the time f is called, not at the time f is registered using setFinal, that is passed to f. To help me understand exactly what is going on, I wrote some notes on setFinal covering matters in detail - see attached. I don't know how accurate this is though. Although the detail is, perhaps, excessive for some users, I found a low-level description quite useful. Phil

Resource consumption of the SVN version vs. 5.4.1

Hi all, when I build a large session in Isabelle2011-1 (to be precise, an extension of of JinjaThreads in the Archive of Formal Proofs) with PolyML 5.4.1, this takes 1:51h. While running the session, polyml requires 12GB of memory (VmSize in /proc/<PID>/status). The final call to PolyML.shareCommonData before writing the heap image consumes 17GB of memory. I now ran the same session with the SVN version 1352 of PolyML. Then, it takes 2:35h, 16GB for the session and 21GB for sharing common data. What is happening there? Have other people experienced a similar surge in memory usage and runtime? I don't know (apart from the source code).
