linking polyML modules to C

After more experimenting with GUI in SML, I would like to now try calling an SML module from a C program. That way, the GUI could be built using traditional imperative techniques and the program logic could be written in SML. I see how to call a C function from SML, but and not so clear on how to call an SML function from a C program. I want to build code using polyc and then link with a C main program, but could anyone show me a simple example of calling that function and getting its return value? for example, I have defined: fun sum i n f = if i > n then 0.0 else f i + sum (i+1) n f ; fun int2real x = real x ; in linkToC.sml and #include <iostream> #include <fstream> std::ofstream ofs; int main() { std::cout << sum(1,10,int2real) << std::endl; ofs.open("table.dat"); for(int i = 0; i < 20; i++) ofs << i << '\t' << sum(1,i,int2real) << std::endl; } in linkToC.cpp Looking in the polyc script, I thought adding the -c option might allow me to build the object code which I could then link to the sml functions, but it complains about not having a main. wrapping socket with tls

Hello! I've come to in impasse with Ponyo trying to access common REST APIs. I've gotten this far ignoring SSL but it's time to start attacking that. Has anyone done any work on SSL/TLS in Standard ML? I could not find anything on SML/NJ and MLton email archives (and couldn't find a reasonable way to search Poly/ML's). It seems like the Socket module makes the underlying socket int pointer completely opaque. Since that pointer is what you'd need to make the tls call to wrap it in a tls context, it seems like it won't be possible to use the Socket module. I hope I am mistaken because otherwise the necessary step will be to reimplement the Socket module functionality in Ponyo. Any thoughts or suggestions on moving forward? -- Phil Eaton

FFI overhead

I noticed that PolyML FFI (v5.6, Foreign structure) 100 times slower than MLton and Haskell FFI, and 10 times than Perl. :-( But why? After all, Haskell uses also libffi... P.S. I used buildCall3 ((getSymbol libc "foo"), (cUlong, cString, cUint), cUlong) (0, s, String.size s) and buildCall3 ((getSymbol libc "foo"), (cUlong, cPointer, cUint), cUlong) (0, s, String.size s) for test. reasonably reliably inducing a "run out of store" runtime error in OSX with 5.6 (and a fix!?)

I don't have a small reproduction of the issue, but if you use bin/Holmake --qof with HOL4 at SHA1 6bf2bfd with the following file on a quiet (without much else running at the same time) Macbook Pro (OSX 10.11.6) open HolKernel boolLib bossLib Parse val _ = new_theory"foo248" val _ = Define`foo a b = a < b` val _ = overload_on("<:",``\a b. foo b a``) val _ = export_theory() then you will almost certainly get the following error out of Poly: Run out of store - interrupting threads The file is being read into Poly through a custom use function with its own lexer (to handle the backquotes) with calls to PolyML.compiler. If you add a semicolon at the end of the second line, you don't get the error. With just a bit of load, the error is harder to get. Michael
