Inspecting structures

Is there a way to look at the contents (i.e. signature) of a structure without opening it? (I suppose you could just open it then call a lot of PolyML.Compiler.forgetXXX, but that's quite tedious) Also, is it possible to retrieve the long path of an identifier in scope? Something that will, for example, take the rev in scope and say that it came from List. Finally, what about searching for an identifier that would come into scope if you opened some structures?

polyc and poly --script

Hi, two completely orthogonal questions/remarks for PolyML 5.5.1: 1.) When building PolyML with '--with-system-libffi' the '-lffi' part is missing in the linker line in polyc. 2.) Is it somehow possible to see if an ML file is run via 'poly --script' or as a standalone executable? Because for the one the logic has to be wrapped in 'fun main ()', and for the other it should not :). (Ie, what I want: if is_script then main() else () ) Thanks, Ren? -- Ren? address type in Poly/ML interface to C (FFI)

Hello. As I can see, there is no address type. The suggested conversion for C pointers (POINTER : vol Conversion) converts a C pointer to "vol". As follows from http://www.polyml.org/docs/CInterface.html#17%20Volatile%20Implementation , "vol" contains an address of a heap object. If its boolean field "owns" is true, it garbage-collects its heap object. If a C library requires that freeing a heap object be done explicitely, managing an address to that heap object by "vol" is inefficient and confusing. A "vol" value contains an index of the element of the "vols" array which contains an address of a memory block which contains an address of the heap object. What I really need is an ML integer type that is wide enough to hold a C pointer; I called it "address type". I'm trying to create a binding to the XCB library ( http://xcb.freedesktop.org/ ). Some functions from XCB don't manage memory (so the Poly/ML garbage collector may be used); some functions are allocating objects, and those objects must be freed by the function "free" or "xcb_disconnect".

Dear friends of Poly/ML, or Standard ML in general, Isabelle2013-2 is now available from the usual mirror sites: Cambridge (UK) http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/research/hvg/Isabelle/ Munich (Germany) http://isabelle.in.tum.de/ Sydney (Australia) http://mirror.cse.unsw.edu.au/pub/isabelle/ It is mainly an environment for interactive and automated theorem proving, but the integration of Isabelle/ML into the Prover IDE makes it suitable for general Standard ML development (potentially in teaching scenarios). After downloading / unpacking / running the main application of Isabelle/jEdit, the Documentation panel on the right-hand side gives quick access to Examples, notably src/HOL/ex/ML.thy for some Isabelle/ML basics. The manual on Isabelle/jEdit in the same panel provides further details on the IDE, which is based on the jEdit text editor. Makarius

regarding problem with PolyML debugging prompt

Hi, I am using PolyML in windows XP sp3 . I tried to run through example on how to use source level debugger, which is provided on you website .http://www.polyml.org/docs/Debugging.html I am able to open debugging prompt using open PolyML.Debug option. But I am unable to exit debug prompt. I tried control C option . But it is only interrupting compilation, without breakIn option as shown in your website. I set breakIn "f" option as mentioned. Please let me the solution. Thanks and regards Saroj

Motif in Poly/ML: sometimes works, sometimes not

Dear Poly/ML experts, I copy-pasted Motif code from "Poly/ML for Motif: Quick Reference Manual", sections 1.3 and 1.4. When I start poly session and load this code with "use" I sometimes get a Motif window but sometimes do not. I am running polyml 5.5.2 on x86_64 Ubuntu, compiled with "--with-x --enable-shared" against Open Motif 2.3.4. Am I missing something? -- Regards, Piotr Trojanek
