Inspecting structures

Is there a way to look at the contents (i.e. signature) of a structure without opening it? (I suppose you could just open it then call a lot of PolyML.Compiler.forgetXXX, but that's quite tedious) Also, is it possible to retrieve the long path of an identifier in scope? Something that will, for example, take the rev in scope and say that it came from List. Finally, what about searching for an identifier that would come into scope if you opened some structures?

Michael, It's probably a good idea to send questions like this to the Poly/ML mailing list and I'm copying this reply to the list. There are people on the list who may have experience of what you're trying to do and also any replies get archived and reduce the chances of the same question being asked repeatedly. To reply to your specific question: there's no difference in efficiency between TextIO and BinIO on Unix. On Windows TextIO is more complicated because of the need to convert between CRLF and "\n". I'm not clear how you are accessing the file, whether it is random or sequential. To read individual bytes you can always use BinIO.input1 or TextIO.input1. This would save you having to explode a vector. BinIO deals with values of type Word8.word and the vector is Word8Vector.vector. These are unsigned byte values. 32 bit Compiler stuck

Hello, When compiling the following function with 32 bit poly, the compiler does not return (tried on Unixes). CALL FOR PAPERS 14th International Symposium Trends in Functional Programming 2013 Brigham Young University, Utah, U.S.A. May 14-16, 2013 http://faculty.cs.byu.edu/~jay/conferences/2013-tfp/ The symposium on Trends in Functional Programming (TFP) is an international forum for researchers with interests in all aspects of functional programming, taking a broad view of current and future trends in the area. It aspires to be a lively environment for presenting the latest research results, and other contributions (see below), described in draft papers submitted prior to the symposium. A formal post-symposium refereeing process then selects a subset of the articles presented at the symposium and submitted for formal publication. Selected papers will be published as a Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS: http://www.springer.com/lncs) volume. TFP 2013 will be the main event of a pair of functional programming events at Brigham Young University. First will be the International Workshop on Trends in Functional Programming in Education and then TFP. The TFP symposium is the heir of the successful series of Scottish Functional Programming Workshops. Previous TFP symposia were held in Edinburgh (Scotland) in 2003, in Munich (Germany) in 2004, in Tallinn (Estonia) in 2005, in Nottingham (UK) in 2006, in New York (USA) in 2007, in Nijmegen (The Netherlands) in 2008, in Komarno (Slovakia) in 2009, in Oklahoma (USA) in 2010, in Madrid (Spain) in 2011, and in St. Andrews (UK) in 2012. For further general information about TFP please see the TFP homepage at http://www.tifp.org/. SCOPE OF THE SYMPOSIUM The symposium recognises that new trends may arise through various routes. As part of the symposium's focus on trends we therefore identify the following five article categories. High-quality articles are solicited in any of these categories: Research Articles: leading-edge, previously unpublished research work Position Articles: on what new trends should or should not be Project Articles: descriptions of recently started new projects Evaluation Articles: what lessons can be drawn from a finished project Overview Articles: summarising work with respect to a trendy subject Articles must be original and not submitted for simultaneous publication to any other forum. They may consider any aspect of functional programming: theoretical, implementation-oriented, or more experience oriented. A student paper is one for which the authors state that the paper is mainly the work of students, the students are listed as first authors, and a student would present the paper. A prize for the best student paper is awarded each year. SUBMISSION AND DRAFT PROCEEDINGS Acceptance of papers for presentation at the symposium is based on a lightweight screening process of extended abstracts (2 to 10 pages in length) or full papers (max 16 pages). Accepted abstracts are to be completed to full papers before the symposium for publication in the draft proceedings. Latex style files are available from Springer's web page (llncs2e.zip), and are linked below. The submission must clearly indicate which category it belongs to: research, position, project, evaluation, or overview paper. _environ not found in polyml applications on Mac

Hello, poly builds and runs fine on mac, but standalone applications do not work (on OSX 10.6.8, at least). When running aplications, one gets: dyld: Symbol not found: _environ Referenced from: / ... /lib/libpolyml.4.dylib Expected in: flat namespace in / ... /lib/libpolyml.4.dylib Trace/BPT trap It happens that variable environ cannot be accessed directly from shared libraries; there is a paragraph about that in the environ(7) man page (last paragraph). The fix is to replace in file libpolyml/process_env.cpp the line: extern char **environ; by: #if __APPLE__ #include <crt_externs.h> #define environ (*_NSGetEnviron()) #else extern char **environ; #endif Best, Bernard.

poly configure options

Hello, First, congratulations to the Polyml 5.5 developpers ! To give it a serious try, I need to compile poly for various architectures, in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. I could successfully compile the 64 bit version for MacOSX on my macbook (that compiles in 64 bits by default), but I failed to build a 32 bit version of poly on that machine. I tried various configure options, like --build=i386-apple-darwin10.8.0, and adding -m32 to CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS and LDFLAGS, but with no success so far :-( Same question, but symmetric, for solaris 11 (x86) 64bit: I could successfully build a 32 bit poly (default for gcc on that machine), but could not build a 64 bit version ...
